Functional Ankle Injury Prevention 〔✎〕
FEBRUARY 22, 2024
If you were to ask our Head Athletic Trainer, Mason Sanborn, what one of the most common reasons an athlete ends up in his office or in need of his help, he would tell you that it is an ankle roll and/or injury. This is especially the case with soccer players. We have had countless ankle-related injuries in my decade with the John Jay Soccer Program. However, many of these are wholly preventable with proper, targeted strengthening exercises designed to protect the ankle from these rolls, sprains, and so forth.
So, the newest addition to our Player Resources page is a dedicated page to Functional Ankle Injury Prevention Exercises. This article, by Jerry Sheck, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Bucknell University, is designed to help prevent ankle injuries with targeted exercises, and strengthen the ankle complex with moves like banded eversion and inversion, and resisted dorsi-flexion. These exercises target key muscles and ligaments, reducing the risk of sprains and strains. Incorporate them into your routine for stronger, more stable ankles.
Consider adding these exercises to daily routines to help keep yourself on the field, where we need you!
