5th Annual SHS Soccer Tournament

MAY 14, 2024

The Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos Chapter of the Spanish Honor Society, or La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, is excited to announce its 5th Annual John Jay Soccer Tournament, scheduled for Friday, May 31, 2024! Join in for an afternoon of fun from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM on the John Jay High School Turf *. The tournament will feature a 6 v 6 playing format, with teams consisting of up to 7 players, including students and teachers. This incredible event is once again organized and led by Coach Louie Oliveira, the Boys Soccer Coach at Van Wyck Junior High and Advisor for the Spanish Honor Society.

* Weather permitting. If there is inclement weather, the event will be held in the John Jay Gymnasium.

This year, our event is proud to support two remarkable charitable organizations. The first, LiveOnNY, honors Virginia 'Ginger' Gutierrez and features a dedicated team of over 300 professionals including clinicians, educators, and social workers. Together, they champion the life-changing impact of organ and tissue donation. LiveOn works tirelessly, 365 days a year, on education, engagement, advocacy, and the intricate logistical aspects of donation, helping to save the lives of those in need of transplants. They also offer unwavering support and solace to donors and their families throughout the donation process and beyond.

The second organization being supported is the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children fighting pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers. They achieve this by connecting these brave children with local teams, clubs, and community groups. To date, Friends of Jaclyn has positively impacted over 950 families affected by these challenging diseases.

Supporting this incredible event and its associated charities is easy and rewarding. If you're interested in fielding a team of 6 - 7 students and/or teachers to compete, simply have each team member fill out this form, and the team captain can complete this Google Form to sign up for the 2024 tournament! Teams will battle it out World Cup style, and registration costs $5.00 per player. First, second, and third-place winners will receive medals and a trophy!

If you're unable to participate in the on-the-field action, you can still contribute by purchasing a performance t-shirt for $16.00, provided by the local small business Harbolic T-Shirt Company. All proceeds from t-shirt sales will go to the charitable organizations we support. The deadline to purchase a performance t-shirt is Sunday, May 19, so don't delay!

Another way to support is by donating goods. The Spanish Honor Society is seeking donations such as individual bags of chips, Gatorade, bottled water, baked goods, and other items that can be sold at the concession stand. Please bring all donations for drop-off to John Jay in the Foreign Language Office, Room 108.

In addition to donations, in association with our C.A.R.E.S. Initiative, we are in need of volunteers to help organize and facilitate the event. Whether it's setting up, cleaning up, keeping score, taking photos, or working at the concession stand, every bit of help is both welcome and appreciated.

Lastly, if you're not able to contribute in any of the above ways, we invite you to come out and cheer on your favorite team on Friday, May 31st, at our John Jay turf field from 3:00 - 6:00 pm, and enjoy some snacks from the concessions stand!
