New 2024 Tryout Run Test

The John Jay Soccer pre-season run has been a staple of the tryout process for several decades. It has evolved over the years from a 2-mile run for all players trying out at every level, to a 1.5-mile and 1-mile run for Varsity and JV players trying out, respectively, several years ago. Beginning in Fall 2024, though, it will go through yet another transformation. Moving forward, all players trying out for both the JV and Varsity teams will participate in a 9-Minute Cooper Run Test. The run is meant to test aerobic fitness and cardiovascular endurance. The test measures how far a player can run in a 9-minute time period, breaking the intervals into 100 meter chunks or ‘gates’. The expected number of ‘gates’ to be achieved for a Varsity level player is 24, which would equate to 1.5 miles, or 6 full laps around the track, in 9 minutes.
